my final book project for typography 2.

assignment was to take a given text and combine or juxtapose it with a second text of your choosing. the final product is to be a 2 copies of a book, one to keep, one to give to the professor.

my assigned text was an essay called the Love Bucket (http://www.abrasivedesign.com/risd/type2/love_bucket.doc) (48 kb Word document) by Nataliya Ilyin. This essay talked about love and hate and how it influences design in some ways. I chose to juxtapose this with the HTML source code from the Design Observer (http://www.designobserver.com) website. My thesis is that the cold industrial HTML code is the unemotional and pragmatic underneath of design, and love and hate are the same but opposite end, the emotional and human underneath of design - granted a website design then makes the HTML, not the other way around but you get my point, i am looking at it from the other direction.

the way i chose to present this is an aluminum form box as the cold HTML aesthetic, inside of whihc the body of the text rests comfortably inside a fur lined chamber, the warm emtional aesthetic. the way i chose to integrate the texts was to mimic the notion of HTML describing a nesting of tables, i chose to 'nest' the text inside the HTML code by cutting into think strips on a slightly different paper and laying them into the book like so.

the book is laserprinted, the title on the cover is an acetone transfer. the binding is done with bull clips with the little metal handles removed. you can view all of the images here (http://www.abrasivedesign.com/risd/type2)

comments, crtiques etc always wanted. to my surpise this was extremely well recieved, it was completely unlike anything anyone else did.
