Dubtastic had a great idea to have a monthly theme for photography so...

Okay who will start this month off? We need a theme for taking photos.

First suggestion will problably be used. We problably want something more specific than lets say: Landscapes if you catch my meaning.

Cheers.

how bout this

to catch a texture in the right lighting so it has a high tonal value making it look really funky.

although i won't be able to participate, due to the fact that i must learn to use and buy a good camera :b

maybe we should make a monthly thing in the digital area also? Like painting or something. Im guessing a lot of people here (including me) dont have a camera worth more than a nickel and two craps. I think it would be fun

adam, sounds like a good idea. Do you want to start that thread?

DJ: that might be a bit too specific, but maybe someone can expand on it.

I was thinking themes like - Pollution, white, stripes, etc.

What do you guys think?

I like Steeldolphins idea too; it allows artistic flexibility while getting us to shoot something we wouldn't ordinarily.

Is it just a theme or a "contest”? Are points awarded or comments and critique made?
Would we want to put any restrictions on? like:
New photos only?
Filters?
Darkroom Techniques?
Photoshop Adj. ?

As for cameras...
My camera was made in 1969 and is 5 years older than I am. It belonged to my wife's grandfather who purchased it in Japan at a Worlds Fair I believe. Until a year and a half ago it had not been used in 20 years. In other words start hitting up those relatives. :)
It takes good still shots but would definitely lag behind any AE/AF camera as far as action shots, and no zoom lenses here (though they did make one 70-150mm).

...and stop laughing at my camera :)

Okay then what i propose is an idea that photok gave me a long time ago when I was writing up a little article on Creativity. We will implement the 'Creativity Jar'

I have a long list of Adjectives and once a month will put an adjective forth. The idea will be to shoot a photograph or series of photos that depict that adjective. It sounds easy enough but it can be as challenging as you want to make it.

I will post a set of 'guidelines' here and then we can all see if we like them and then Iwill make an official post and 'sticky' it in this forum.

CREATIVITY JAR ASSIGNEMNT

Once a month an adjective will be selected (by me problably for now) and your task is to take a photograph, or series of photos based on that adjective.

Restricitions:
There are very few restricitions, creativity is the key here.

New photos only.

Photoshop/Darkroom adjustments are fine, both are acceptable for modifying the final image. The only restriciton here is that you should limit Photoshop use to only things like level/contrast adjustments color balance etc. and cropping, Toning is okay too. All these things are adjustments that could easily be made in a chemical darkroom or by a commercial lab so are therefore acceptable. No composities or blending of images, original images only.

The photos maybe in color, B+W or toned.

No text...the person viewing the image(s) should be able to get the didea of the adjecive from the descriptive imagery you have captured.

People may critique the images if they so desire (and its encouraged), but you will also be asked to give a rating of stars. ( I will add a star smiley or something) from 1-5.

At the end of the assignment the stars for each participant will be added up and the average will be their final score. A list of the participants will be made with all their scores...like a leaderboard.
Maybe iwill post about the monthly leaders in the news of SDC.

I am not sure about the scoring system, but it might be an interesting way to measure ones own progress.

Anybody have anything to add, or suggest? Should we keep the scoring system? I just want this to be a friendly no pressure sort of thing.

I suggest "Repetition" for next month

Good idea. Dan. Repitition is an important compositional tool.

Yeah, and not too easy either ;)

I saw a photo in a magazine of rental boats, like canoes, lined up together. It was in the "Judgement" section where the editors constructively critique readers work. Anyways, the editors found a whole load of things wrong with his composition. I'd like to give it a shot sometime, to see what I can come up with.
