Soccer anyone? -
I know there are several members here from Europe, so I was just curious if any of you folks are fans of 'football'. Over in North America soccer is beginning to get some interest but its no where near as popular as it is overseas and in South America.
I personally love the game, I play on a Men's Division 2 team here in Kelowna and am an avid fan of the Premier League in England. I do keep track of the other Premier leagues in Europe as well.
So if their any other fans out there speak up! Who is your team, favorit player, etc. :)

I love soccer, haven't missed a season since I started when I was 9 or 10. I'm 17 now, soooooo many seasons, but I've loved every one of them.
I'm in VA right now, but I dont play "travel" soccer, right now I'm just playing division 1 in the recreational leagues against teams across Northern VA. While I was in NC I played more competitive soccer...it was kinda sad we made the league championship 6 years in a row, and never won it once. I have 6 Silver Medals, every time I look at them, I think to myself "not even one gold?". We also went to the Regional Tournament one year, but we lost too the team that ended up winning the State tourney 1-0. My soccer career has been a roller coasters. We never finish though, we always lose at the end.
Favorite Players - Roy Keane, David Beckham, Brian McBride.

Newcastle United, been a supporter for 26yr, season ticket holder for 11yr, the kid has stopped me going for the past few years, well, 5, the missus was a deciding factor too, played a bit too before a bad knee injury, medial and cruciate torn out, bad tackle, played in the northern league for a couple of year (one step down from the conference) trials for swindon and carlisle, favourite player was andy cole when he played for us, 46 goals in one season (very very rare when there's only 38 games), dream partnership with peter beardsley, think he got about 26 in that season, craig bellamy is the current hopeful, along with kieron dyer, definately taking over the matle that shearer is going to leave behind

digitalelement: Six silvers, well that is still a agreat accomplishment. I think Roy Keane is a great player as well - alot of heart. Beckham of course but his media profile turns me off a bit, and I never really got to see him play much before his move to Real Madrid. I just began watching EPL last year cause now i can get on our cable.
Monk: wow, sounds like you had an interesting career before that unfortunate injury. It must be something else to actually go to see an EPL game. The closest I have been was when I was in Germany and was able to watch a Bundes Liga game.
Being a person not of England my choice for favorites was base greatly on style of play and my favorites may actually piss off the english enthusiast. :) I have been a big fan of the french, and style players Theirry Henry, Viera, and Pires. So Arsenal is the team I generally root for (although I must say that I am not a big fan of the french ligue). I am not sure but I think Andy Cole started his premiership career with Arsenal...but I could be wrong. Despite Arsenals previous disciplinary problems they still have alot of character in a league where big money purchases seem to be the order of the day (Reyes excluded of course ;) ).
I am not a supporter of ManU like 90% of the world that watch the game from outside England but since they brought in the likes of C. Ronaldo (I love watching this kid play), Tim Howard and a few others they have borught in a nice mix of international flavour and aere a delight to watch.
I also like Newcastle as well, likes of Craig Bellamy and the depth of experience in Shearer and Speed they are always strong contentders.
Its good to see some soccer fans here...and I am not judged too harshely for my support of the Gunners. :)
Who knows maybe I will start a soccer forum some day. :)

hehe, well, not career, was a printer at the time, but i did get paid £20 for a win, £10 for a draw, which was good, a lot went into subscriptions and stuff but it paid for the after game sessions down the pub :), think cole did start at arsenal as a schoolboy, we bought him from charlton, then sold him to *spit* man u to buy shearer, arsenal are good to watch since wenger took over, they were always hated for the boring football, but they play a much more open game nowadays, going to start taking my son when he's a bit older, if i can afford the tickets by then

I am a Middlesbrough fan and we just won the carling cup this weeekend :grinning: I have supported them most of my life. My favourite player would be Zinedine Zidane. I have never seen a player like him that can pass or strike a ball with either foot so well. I used to play until I wrecked my knee for the second time in four years and then I was adviced to retire. I was leading goal scorer too this season :furious3:
Suppose you can`t win them all :(
I think arsenal are one of the best teams in the world on current form. The way they are playing football at the minute is a pleasure to watch, very open. Henry is a world class player, I hate him though :cheeky:
Ashely Cole came through the youth ranks at arsenal. My coz is going to see the return leg of the CL game between arsenal and cetla vigo...lucky for some

I'm not the most dedicated viewer, but since soccer has played a big part of my childhood (as it has for most danes). You can't help enjoying watching the games. Mostly because of the beer ;)

Haha, great to see more soccer fans. :)
Hazely I think its great that Middlesborough won the Carling cup. :)
Zidane is a marvel to watch...another talented French national.
Arsenal is in really good form and have been lucky with injuries etc. (knock on wood), and unless they seriously choke they will take the league, possibly the double, and hopefully the triple :)
The only player I dont like on Arsenal is Jens Lehman, as good as he is he is kind of an ass. I wish Tim Howard played for Arsenal, I have watched him since he was in the MLS, and he has alot of character and heart and is one hell of a keeper.
Cone: Beer is good ;)

But of course it's always easy to love the winning team innit?

Hazely you rule :)
Those are some great moments.
That Goal by Henry....man, simply unbeleivable.
You also have one by one of the great Dutchmen...Bergkamp. That guy has a sublime touch. There was a goal he scored last year or maybe it was the year before that it was considered one of the all time great goals, he scored it while in Arsenal Kit, but I cant recall against whom and I have only seen it once in a replay...It was this amazing one touch turn past a defender...
Roberto Carlos is one of my favorite Real Madrid players, deadly on the free kicks. Bend it like Beckham? Nah Bend it like Carlos!
http://www.hangtime.nildram.co.uk/goals/Dennis_Bergkamp_Ars1997.mpeg <--that is the goal you are talking about. It is one of the greatest goals you`ll ever see!
Another goal by the person that in my book is GOD!
Besides in a couple weeks if the weather holds I might consider breaking out the boots, and guess who Iam going to be asking to boot the ball around with?

i live in portugal ... where people love soccer as much as the english (or even more).
but you know what ? i cant stand the game!
here it has lots it all : the sportsmanship, the team feeling, the whole love for the game.
this may seem extreme to some of you, but its how i see things. i see people arguing about the game like it was their ass on the field; i see people come up with conversations and arguments about "how a bad trainer _____ is" that always end up with something like "if i were him...".
the fans get into fights constantly, the stadiums get wrecked almost on a regular basis (a guy I know claims to have stolen a chair from a stadium).
team rivalry really goes over the roof in portugal, people have forgotten about what the game is all about. not just that, but politics gets its finger into the scheme too. and as if that wasnt enough, when i was a kid i felt coersed (sp?) into liking soccer and picking a team. and nowadays i feel people get surprised when i say i dont like soccer... go figure :|

You know SD(2) your feelings are shared and sympathized by many. Unfortunately soccer is not the only game that suffers this infamy. I do have to say though from what I have seen the sportsman ship is no worse than that of Hockey and other sports over here.
Its so bad for kids growing up over here that there are actually tv commercials berating parents for pressuring their kids in sports. Alot has to do with the comericalism and the money riding on these things.
When it comes down to it I feel fortunate because IO can sit back and enjoy the Beautiful Game without the hooligans, and without the pressure of hardcore fans. I can really enjoy it for the sport of it. :)

Right....Middlesbrough got beat last night by Birmingham City 3-1. I just seen the highlights and Boro seem to play well :furious3:
I looked at the team boro had out and to be honest I was well shocked to see he rested are best players.
This really gets on my nerves. Why do footy players need a rest? they normally play 90minutes in one day and then do naff all for a few days then play another 90min....Most clubs train the players every few days for a few hours in the morning and then they have the rest of the day of! It must be hard running around for 90min for ONE DAY!
Boro played in the cup final on sunday then on wed against Birmingham. that is two days rest.............HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET YOUR ENERGY BACK?!?!?!?
PACK OF GIRLS THE LOT OF THEM!

I know, but It does add up quick. Persoanlly I cant play very long but I am in terrible fitness cardio-wise, but I can see why player need rest. Over-training is common at this level of competition.
It does bug me though...damn they should be machines with the money they get payed. :)
I am looking forward to the Champions League match between Arsenal and Celta :) They better have their top 11 out!

Not so happy about the Ronaldo thing....any news on his recovery?
tough luck on Djemba-djemba as well he is a good player. Manure is 'hurting' literally.
All the money in the world cant garauntee fitness for your players.
I am just glad ARSENAL is through to the next round :)
A brace from Theirry Henry too - way to go numero 14 :)

Wow! football talk eh!.......we Scots are absoluty mad about Fitba....
I am a Glasgow Rangers Fan, followed the team every sat since I was 10 years of age............My Grandfathers fence outside was Blue, Red and white and he learned me all the Rangers songs when I was a wee age of 5....
We are not doing too good this season- but we will be back, as Rangers will buy, buy and buy at the end of the season..........and they will probably play better if they stop drinking that whisky before the games !!
