Myself and several other people who are working with a Adobe RGB colour management setting were having problems with the save for web changing the bightness of images. Mainly darker. I have now found an absolute solution to this problem, though it is a bit more complex than I would want it to be (ie more than one step).

What you need to do is set a custom RGB profile before you save for web.

Image -> Mode -> Convert to Profile (pop-up)

Under profile change to -> Custom RGB profile

In the resulting Pop-up enter a gamma of 3 instead of 2.2. This should get you an almost exactly accurate image when save for web is used.

:)

There were several other methods around like converting to LAB mode first which made a little difference but it was still off.

If anybody knows an easier method that will work also work 100%, please let me know.

Thanks Andrew, I have run into the problem before and had used the lab mode conversion. I dont generallyrun into this problem too much anymore though as when i am working on things for the web my color settings are set to a web profile, but you are problably using images from your digital Camera.

Corrections with gamma or lab mode are really not necessary guys. :D

All you have to do is to sleect the little triangle in the save for web preview window, where you can select 'Uncompensated Color', 'Standard Windows Colo'r, 'Standard MacIntosch Color' or 'Use Document Color Profile'.
Make the correct selection and no dark images anymore.

Geez I thought you had a good fix there.

You have to right click on the image to get to that option, at least in CS (I don't have 7 on this machine, I will check the other tomorrow).

After you save the file though and open it in a browser it is still dark, it seems to be only affecting how it displays in the save for web preview not how it actually displays in a browser.
I tried both Netscape 7 and IE 6 to make sure but they are both still dark trying your method. When you try the gamma one they match the file in Photoshop as far as I can tell exactly.

Well, it works for me and everybody else on the photoshop board I visit on a regular basis. We even made it a sticky.

Same here...I guess we are just not 133t enough with TEH Photoshop...

It might make a difference that I'm set up for pre-press use, not web graphics.
I don't use sRGB for my RGB colour profile.

Again in the save for web preview it looks good but not after opening the resulting file in a web browser.

I know, I have two separate profiles set up for work. One for Pre Press and one for web, I use the sRGB for the RGB in the web profile, so I dont usually run into this problem any more. What I see is what I get...

Ah, I see, you use Adobe RGB, my fault.
In that case it's just Image/Mode/Convert to profile like you said earlier, but I don't understand why you use that gamma correction? Let me guess... you're using a Mac?

Nope using a PC.

I find even if I convert to sRGB or even set my colour settings in PS to web defaults I still get the same problem when I use save for web. If I convert to LAB mode first then things are better but still nowhere near what the image looks like in PS. The Gamma adjustment is the only thing I have found that gives me the same colour between PS and web browser.

Keep in mind I only have this problem with photos that were scanned or taken digitally with a native Adobe RGB profile. If I create web graphics in PS everything is fine.
