I do have a professional hosting service with 150MB space, but I still think that attachments should be stored on this server;

a) attachments will always be available, unlike attachment links that don't work anymore, because the external server has a problem or the files don't exist anymore. This board should serve as some kind of reference, like a knowledge base and dead links shouldn't be part of it, not even after several weeks or months.

b) posting an image using an attachment option on the board is much easier for the majority of users. I'm a technical guy, but lots of others aren't or don't have the interest in anything technical at all. You'll get more activity in threads if you make it easier for members to add screenshots, art, photographs, etc. An image says more than a thousand words...

c) storing attachments on this server makes threads faster, instead of embedded links to slow servers that could be anywhere on this planet

d) every good board does it, for all the reasons mentioned earlier.

You don't have to change anything for me personally (let's be that perfectly clear), I can live with the situation, but for the future of this board you might consider this change.

Attachments are actually on.

I can agree but disagree. Right now it might be good but if this board becomes larger it will become a problem for Chris and the board. One being load time 2 webspace available. So now the board is fast but imagine 2,000 users each with one attachment ranging about 100-150k = Slow Sever + High Bandwidth = Costly.

Yes that is one downside Ed, I am hoping that in time as the board grows so will revenue streams to help compensate for the increase in bandwidth and usage, if it doesnt or if the board's performance is adversely affected I will discontinue attachments.

I know that people with web space would problably prefer to use their own for the images, and I appreciate that :)

Yeah, but now you're talking about "what if".
Some boards have thousands of members, but that doesn't mean that each one of them is an active member. Don't be surprised that board's with 2,000 members, only have 50 active members and those 50 don't even show up every day. I've been there, I've seen it. Renderosity is an example of a completely different story. There you have at any time about 1500-2000 members online, but with all respect, I don't see this site going in that direction, it's probably also not what you guys have intended.

I've run my own board with 1700 members and it's all about making calculations; how many images can you expect each day, what are the limitations for these images, how many times do you expect to prune, etc. I can't say that all these images made my hosting cost a fortune, but that's just relative, I can't look in someone else's wallet ;)

And about being able to post attachments on this board... I'm sorry, I see it's on, but I can't say it works.

First it tells me that the max size should be lower than 100KB, so I changed it to 65KB and then it says I exceeded the forum's limit with some 750 KB... kinda strange don;'t you think?

Yes, I apologize for this attachment thing, its on...and I ahve the size limit set to what I believe shoul dbe 128kb max but I know a i have recieved several errors from members trying to post smaller images...I will look into it.

vb3 is supposed to be pretty robust and I havent heard of any issues with this feature so its more likely an admin=id10t?error
