Photoshop CS vs Painter 8 -
Been thinking of starting to paint again, but have come to the conclusion that I can't afford it atm as well as got a lack of space where I'm moving to these days. (18 square feet in total, ouch). Still want to start painting again tho, so i've started think of going into the digital world of painting. Never done that before, could be interesting. So... Havent even drawn a traditional drawing in years so I guess I need to get into some anatomy books and stuff. Enough babling...
I got PS CS, but have heard so much nice about painter, and to be honest it sounds like an awesome tool one you've gotten to know it. I know that some of you in here use both, one of them or combining them both. If you could share some points of views on the ups and downs that would be awesome.
Btw, this is also why I made the Software Import thread. Pretty expencive here in Norway.
Thanks in advance. :)

Painter is a very cool program and 8 has some nice features like a color mixing palette that acts very much like a real one, however its riddled with over head and the brush engines in Painter are notoriously slow for older slower machines..even faster ones have problems with larger brushes etc....so you should know what your getting into there.
When it comes to emulating natural media, Painter wins hands down for ease in that regard...however I will tell you quite honestly that PS owns. Save your money that you would spend buying the Painter software and invest in a Intuos Tablet if you dont have one already. Some of the best digital painters (and that includes Mr. Goodbrush (http://www.goodbrush.com/) himself) out there still use PS. Its alot faster and the brush engine is getting more and more advanced with each new version. Painter can be fun to play around in and granted can make some beautiful art, but in the end its the artists that makes the art, and if you know your way around PS you can pretty much do anything (and more) with it.
My 2 cents on that matter for what its worth. ;)

You will also get a classic version of Painter with the tablet and you would be able to get a discount on the full version upgrade if you decided you like it.
If painter was as fast as PS then it would be a much better tool. If you are doing small canvases then it works ok but for large ones (5000 pixels or more in each direction) it runs really slow on any computer using anything larger than a 150 to 200 pixel brush which is very small at that canvas size.
Keep in mind that 6000 pixels is only 20 inches at 300dpi and Anry (http://www.anry.ru/eng/gallery/gallery.htm) works at around 6000 by 10000 pixels. Not sure how he does it, must use small brushes.

Yes he does, i had a video tutorial (filming of the progress of a painting) and the brushes are very small.

For those interested in the "painting" video, you can find it here:
I use Photoshop for 98 % of every type of digital art that I do, that includes when I'm at work professionally and when I'm at home for fun, and this includes digital painting. But I do have Painter 7 installed at home (I know your thread asks about Painter 8) and I do find that while Photoshop's latest brush engine is pretty nice, and usually sufficient, there are a lot of different painting tricks that it might be better to do in Painter. Example, painting with a pallette knife or simulating thick impasto.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I guess I'll wait on buying it. Downloading the demo when I'm settled in my appartment when I have got my computer back to fool around a bit. I already got a Wacom Graphire3 A5 tablet, but I didn't get painter classic with that tablet. Perhaps I'll save up some money to upgrade my tablet instead. I wan't to go up one size as well as to get 1024 instead of 512 preassure points. A4 or A4 oversized.
Thanks again.

You don't have to buy it on the internet flex if I get you right. I ordered it from a local shop in my town in Norway. Was no big deal. I belive you can do the same.

ON painting in PS....
EraserX has some really REALLY nice pallete knives that he made for photoshop, and I think they hung the friggin' moon. =) Steel polly know's where they're at on here, he posted them a while back.
I think they're the bizomb. Here's what I've been doing with them lately, on a digital painting of a slightly reworked Frankenstein's Monster...
If you are tight for budget and want start painting again! In the "digital" world that is.
Well, look no more! I stumbled across this website and they got this kick ash program called “ArtRage”. It’s almost like Painter but quicker. It doesn’t take hardly any ram at all! It really stimulates the brush very very well. I am quite surprised.
The best think is….you guess it..it’s FREE!
..blah blah.. anyhow. Go to http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html and download it.
I use this quite often.
Enjoy!

Cartoonimator: Yeah I have Erasers brushes and have used them on occasion but I still always resort back to the basic rounds in PS.
Owen; I downloaded Artrage for the fun of it...cool little program actually, its not something I would problably use because I ahve Painter and PS but I am quite impressed by it for its size and simplicity.

I'm getting Corel Painter Essentials 2 with my new tablet soon. Going to be nice to finaly try that out as well. I have just started to fool around with painting in PS as some of you may have seen. Still on my first piece though, need to finish it asap. Actually I so far like best to use the basic round brushes in PS too.
