I got Photoshop 7 yesterday and tried out the brushes for awhile.
They are a lot more like traditional media and there are some cool features. You can still use your paintbrush just as you could before, so theres no problem there (we know adobe likes to change things on us a lot). But theyve gotten rid of the Airbrush. There is an airbrush option but its exactly the same as the Paintbrush, the only difference is, well, nothing, the opacity doesnt change if you hold down the mouse button. So if you set the opacity to 30% then it will stay at 30% like the paintbrush. Its like they made the airbrush only usefull with the Airbrush stylus from Wacom (since it has a flow wheel).
One of the coolest things is the dual brush feature. You can choose your primary brush then select a second one for variations and texture. You can select the second one to scatter around also for some cool looking stuff. But certain brushes combined will make your brush stroke just as slow, if not slower than the smudge tool. So dont go too crazy.
If you combine the scatter feature with a second brush you can also make your stroke drip color around. It really does look convincing, its not some cheap effect that has been tried by a lot of programs before.
Its also great how you can change the size of custom brushes.
But if you are a mouse user then you may want to stay away from PS 7. Simply because the Airbrush isnt usefull at all. If you are used to using the Paintbrush with a mouse then PS7 is great. If you are used to the Airbrush then its not going to be a welcome change.
Heres a screenshot I took of the brush features in action. The red stuff is the scatter+dual brush. The blue is just a dual brush.
