View Full Version : To Battle or not to Battle?

I know alot of graphics and arts forums have battle areas for challenges and graphics duels. They are not something I take part in however, but I know they are very popular so maybe we should have one here.

I have a forum planned for contests and such (Its actually there but not visible or active.) And the battle forum would slide nicely in there if we have one.

I guess my question is how many people wold be interested in an art/graphics duel section?

Now keep in mind this forum is still in its infancy so traffic and challenges may be scarce in the beginning so it might be best to have a few people start it etc.

What I would be willing to do is set the forum up and appoint a new moderator for that section as well. I would rely heavily upon the mod to initially get it going and if need be attract a few new members that would be interested in battling here.

Your thoughts?

If yes, who would want the self-less task of taking this responsibility on?

I`m not to sure about this to be honest..I never really take part my-self. What about a trial run?

battles are always fun. I would definitely participate in having a few rounds if you decide to make the forum.

Being the pacifist that I am, I would rather "collaborate" than "battle".

Yeah we would have to decide on the name of it as well...so any suggestions there as well. :)

The "tag-team" analogy maybe? ("Tag-Team Photoshopping")

(If using the "tag-team" analogy is lame, then by all means, feel free to flame me like a baked potato :cheeky: )

I am not much into battles, but I do enjoy looking at the progress of one....and how about " Back to Back " for your topic name?

Pixel Swap

I like that one

I'm not sure I understand the whole concept behind a "graphic battle" (is it similar to the lightboxing challenges at Veer?) but I do like the name Pixel Swap. Battles or collaborations, I'd probably be interested in giving it a go!

simply because a lot of other forums have a battle section, i think that is reason enough to not have one. it seems like reinventing the wheel in many ways, or adding something for the sake of adding something to the board.

in my opinion, i would rather see the monthly contests developed even further, or something along those lines. while i never participated in them, i always thought pixmas did a great job with their samples, which we later carried over into pixel wrath. the basic premise is that a photo, thought, word, etc was posted and people were to create something using that. there were many more details, of course, but that was the idea.

i guess i would like to see something else created here, to make this forum stand above some of the usual battles that are seen elsewhere.

<-- my 2 cents.

Yeah!, I kinda got that feeling aswell- but I didn't want to say to much as I am just a wee newbe at the forum.....These battles are every where, and I love looking at one persons work.......and dub, your 2 cents is worth listening to....

Honestly on other boards... battles rarely are used to improve ones creativity or skills. In many aspects there are but when you all see is dark art grunge etc. That's hardly improving in creativity or skills. But what I'm trying to say is that I agree with dub on this one. I would like to think of SD-F as a place above the rest. A place where I can be challenged and challenge others.

Which is why I'm all for something like PixelWrath... which would rock if it came back though (Hint Hint). Pixel Wrath gave me a challenge and it was a honor to participate with it month after month. One of my favorite pieces of all time came from a Pixel Wrath chapter.

But anyway I say explore and expound upon the Monthly Theme instead of doing a battle grounds.

Why don't we ask my friend vinnyio if we can buy the rights to his "5 Pieces" concept then? I think that was one of the best ideas ever for a Web contest. (Hi John, are you there?) :)

I've never had garlic poured on me in a thread before. Pretty bad. That's the last time I suggest a contest title.

Well I am glad I posted this query, you all have some good points there. I would like the stuff in this forum to be as much for everyone as possible thats why I value the opinions of our members.

Well I certainly want to take the monthly projects a step further, as they arent really doing much right now...but i think thats partly because the subjects suxxor...mabe next month I will have better idea for the projects.

I would also like to spend more time promoting the forum and its events but for then next month or so I am going to be limited in my time.

I will be opening the SDCF Official Contestâ„¢ Forum when I have some prize money and a few more prizes lned up...Dub has been nice enough to donate one of his excellent prints to the cause and that is a great start.

One of the reasons I have added advertisments to this forum is to hopefully help fund these endeavors, and create an even better community.

@jeff: the 5pieces theme was indeed a really nifty one. it was a truly original idea.

Yeah, it was a classic. I hope it's revived soon. vinnyio, if you're out there, speak to us!

Five peices?

Five peices?

Yeah... 5pieces.com was a contest site a couple of years ago run by vinnyio (aka John Donovan), a talented Photoshopper and Web designer from Ireland. The idea was that he would provide five images (photos, art, etc.) that you would use to composite into an original piece. It was a real blast to open the 5 pieces in PS, and to start thinking about how you wanted to put them together into a compostion.

Here is one of my entries (http://www.jeffsdigital.com/images/jefsdigi02.jpg).

I agree @ Dubtastics first statement

I think this forum is special in some way, so why do what all other forums do?

I remember another contest like that 5 pieces idea...the guys who started 'the Pad' forum along time ago had something like that - it was one of the first times I actually entered anything and even tried a photomanip....

so, to sum this thread up, i see that the majority agrees that they would like to separate this board further from other ones that are out there by developing a periodic "contest" or friendly competition of sorts. the trick to define what would be the best route to go.

i personally would like to see a creative combination of the "samples" idea from pixmas, the 5 pieces idea, and the monthly themes here.

hmmmmmm....

I agree Dub, I will start jotting some ideas down.

i have nothing against battles per-se, because in their own way they do promote creativity, however they also tend to always head down a certain path of style and method. at least with a themed project/contest, the creativity and path can be better guided so it does not become stale. :)

I think we are going to have a couple cool themes for April....
