Another study - this time concentrating on the tree shape. Painted the tree and bg with a reference trying to learn the tree painting thing, and of course as I was painting it I thought I would make it a bit more interesting than the photo...at least thats my take on it. :)

Photoshop 7 and Intuos.

This was done quickly at 50% zoom so there is not alot of clean detail but I enjoy the speed in which I can get them out for now.

I hope you enjoy. C&C is welcome of course.

the colors are just superb, chris, and i love the bottom heavy composition. as always, you are one of the few people that can add their logo to an image and make the overall image look better.

my main complaint/suggestion here, is the tree. i realize the speed and canvas size at which you worked, however, the tree has no depth and looks like a cut out. at an initial glance, the leaves and all look great, however, taking a deeper look its a little too much with the smudge tool. i think the main thing that bothers me is the lack of depth in the tree, however..

very nice stuff...

I really enjoyed this image.. I agree with the depth of the tree. The colors are really impressive as they add a depth to the background that a lot of artist don't render too well.

Very nice. My favorite thing about it is the way the fog appears to be rising from over the ridge.

Thanks for the comments and crits guys. :)

The tree is supposed to be fairly flat, because of the lighting but I agree on the leaves. I didnt actually use the smudge tool, but I can see how it might appear that way. I think I need to go in closer with a more opaque brush and detail more and take out some of the blurries if I actually wanted to take it any further. :)

Well, this was different in my eyes and maybe its just me that can see this....but in the tree, I thought I was seeing ghostly faces...or maybe I was just staring at the pic tooooooooooo long and started to Imagine this....but, excellent piece of work.......

great job SD, the colours are fantastic. However I would have liked to see alittle more depth in the picture, for instance something alittle more in the in the distant backround, I see you have the hill or whatever behind tree, but I was thikin more along the lines of maybe deeper, but that's just my opinion, its great none the less. :)

You get an A

yeah the tree looks nice, but i kinda sense it would look better, alot more faded, perhaps more greyer, to sense something looming in the foreground, or perhaps just fading back some of it.
this is nice though, lovely compostioning
am guessing you painted over a photograph?

whoops sorry didnt mean to cause offence, i just figured that would be the easiest way :)
i guess it just depends on the whole issue of digital media for me.
it might sound a little bit harsh, but since its a naturalish scene, would a water colour study outside have been better??
its just the way ive been taught i suppose,
sorry again

didnt mean to offend anyone, i didnt even think it was a harsh thing to ask, until you pointed it out, and i can see how it could be taken in the wrong way.

I think you probably didn't mean to aswell, I just thought it was a funny kind of question for a artist like SD..........and I see he has answered and he's a strong fella with a heart of gold eh! :grin2:
