Just curious to see which if any app you use in your day to day design. :)

You forgot to add Corel Draw to the poll :)

Use quark, still too lazy to learn indesign. I also voted wrong. :furious3: @ myself.

quark makes things hard when they dont have to be, worse than macromedia

Ah thats to be expected from a Quark User. :cheeky:

Joel: Corel Draw for page layout? I guess, but I wouldnt want to use it for a 100-200 page one.

to put it simply...................................... what's Quark?

long live InDesign.

p.s. Quark is a company, Xpress is a program.

Yes shecky you are right re: your ps

but most people refer to it as 'Quark'

Going with common usage. :)

Does Quark even make any other programs?

i'd still go with corel for anything. things seem so damn easy on it... :)

but i'll grant you that : in 100 / 200 page documents, it would be a nightmare

since they are too lazy to address common complaints or add a simple button for common tasks Im willing to bet they are too lazy to make other programs

InDesign

because of the familiar interface, and shared shortcuts with other adobe products. XPress makes me feel like I might as well do it without a computer.

And I've never heard about any other Quark product...

at RISD its all InDesign - no Xpress.

You guys do realize that this will determine the future of the Indesign/Xpress market. ;)

InDesign, no question. Even if QuarkXpress had the same features, I just prefer the Adobe workflow.

I'm a Quark dude, all the way

Tried InDesign a few times at work, but you know what they say. Can't teach an old dog new tricks :D

Boy!, I was so confused at the beginning of this thread....but now after reading all your replies....I guess I am a old Quark Guy

I've been in school for nearly two years now and I've had a healthy dose of Photoshop and Illustrator for some time now, so Quark always felt a bit awkward because of the different interface. Although I haven't been officially trained with InDesign, it just seemed more natural and was quite easy to adapt to. So my vote goes to for InDesign.

The art department at my university uses Quark... I use Quark, though I've used InDesign before. I do like InDesign but my school doesn't have it :(

That kind of sucks man. I mean they should have some more options there, but I guess most schools have have to go with what is more commonly used...at least for now though - I have a feeling that Indesign will make its presence more known in the future.

we are actually getting 2 copies of Xpress just so people can learn it if they want to.

of course i can "acquire" a copy anytime i want but by the time i get out of school everyone on the planet will be on Indesign.

haha.... well we can dream cant we?

souljahs story

used both and am a bit on the fence about the two
quark can be a real cunt to use at times, but i find it easier to adjust the kerning and tracking easier, also it has a send to back and bring to front option for layers, which i can't seem to find in indesign
anyone know where it is?

freakyclean

Just drag the layer up or down in the layers pallet, same as photoshop and illustrator.

Kerning and tracking easier to adjust in quark??

What is easier that click and adjust?

InDesign all the way over here.

Mainly bacause of it's similarities to Photoshop & Illustrator. Plus, I just love Adobe :D

I use Quark, but I have a sneaky suspicion that InDesign would be better simply because it integrates with Photoshop and Illustrator.

freakyclean
04-14-2004, 09:12 PM
Yeah thanks for the reminder :chophead: :rifle:

;)

@ Alda: I just find whith InDesign that I don't run into all the stupid things that Quark does half assed (like undos). InDesign just does all I want and it does it right.

I can only imagine - just the fact that I keep adding tons of extra spaces in my copy because I think I'm spanning the page is enough for me to suspect it'd be better. Maybe I'm just too lazy (or old) to learn a new program. :)

I'm way too used to work in Quark Express to change to InDesign, that would be like changing from Phostoshop to PaintShop Pro or Illustrator to CorelDraw. It would just feel weird.

For me it's not about wich is the better program, Quark can do what i need it to do.

1. I got a pre-press/design who is 50ish to change so I thoink you could too.

2. It is about what is faster. InDesign is a faster workflow.

3. Next time Quark can't find the volume and won't let you save the file, or you move a guide and can't undo it or try and update an image and it says it's the wrong type or can't position a eps becuase of the low res preview, just think of me laughing.

I started off using Indesign....love it so much.

But I do understand and respect the fact that Quark is (unfortunately) still the industry standard DTP application.

Although, ALOT of publishing companies, ad agencies, design firms etc. are switching to Indesign.

I was browsing through the forums when I stumbled upon this thread and found it fascinating!
I got a copy of QuarkXpress a while back and was keen to learn it so bought a book on it. I didn't know if I was being thick, the book was crap or that Quark was a pile of shite but I found it so diffucult to grasp, it seemed that they made everything as diffucult and illogical as possible to use!
I'm glad that most people replying to this thread use InDesign as I'm getting Adobe CS2 soon, looking forward 2 learning that.
Thanks for putting my faith back into layout programs!

@ Henning: Notice Adobe bought Macromedia not Quark. There is a reason for that. ;)

Quark is just intuitively backward to me. It doesn't do thing the way I would expect or does them in a difficult way. In Indesign thing are just where they should be and for the most part work the way you would hope them to.

I've heard with Quark 6.5 it's supposed to be better now... I don't mind quark but I've gotten used to using InDesign they both can do what I need them to do... but InDesign with the new Creative Suite allows easy transfering of files between the Suite programs.. no more special saves. But apprently Quark 6.5 now allows Photoshop native files... so that's a big step a head.

I heard 6.5 is quite nice as well. I was even tempted enough to download a trial version. 2 months later I still have yet to install it. I just can't seem to get over the trauma from my first bout with Quark. Long live InDesign!
