Most cameras just list the bottom half of the fraction. so 1000 is 1/1000th of a second or 8 is 1/8th of a second. 1" is 1 second 30" is 30 seconds.

As Steeldolphin said though it will depend on your camera, check your manual or the manufacturers website. If it is a very basic model it might just be fully automatic.
