Not really photoshop but.. -
..some insights on how I go about light and colours.
I put up a little overview about what thoughts I take into consideration while painting. Mind you, I am self educated and this is what I gathered from observation - this is by no means something that is set in stone or has to be looked at as totally right.
(Tehehe and man - after thinking again about the logic behind it I can see so much mistakes I made while rendering the birdie..)

If you guys have other observations or disagree about something let me know - am also still trying to understand the nature of colours and light/shadows.

Very interesting read Tascha. :) You have made some very astute observations with light and color. I have also been working on a few articles one involving this very subject so I found this quite interesting as I have said.
If I may offer a few observations however.
"1: The ambient light (which in this case is blue from the sky above) gets mixed into the skin colour on the shoulder part more then on other places because they are exposed more to the light coming from above."
Now I am not sure if you are referring to the blue sky as in the sky or a blue source light in general...because if its the sky then the above statement is not really correct. The sky is blue due to an effect known as Rayleigh scattering. Gas molecules in the sky and dust particles absorb and scatter wavelengths of light. Gas molecules absorb the light because they are smaller than the light wavelength and in turn radiates the same wavelength of light it absorbed and in the case of a blue sky - its the blue wavelength (for the most part - at sunset the light has to travel further and more blue light gets scattered elaving the longer wavelengths like red). Now this blue doesnt effect us in the way your example describes, we still recieve the white light (all wavelengths) from the sun.
On shadows. I like the part about cool and warm shadows, thats such an important concept that many people overlook.
I would like to add an observation on shadows that may be helpful to others here (as well as myself). I have learned that there are basically two types of shadows, Form and Cast. Form shadows often (like the shadow on the curving side of the thigh) have ambient light seeping into them and are usually soft edged. Cast Shadows don't usually have as much ambient light inthem as the ambient light lis being blocked, but they do graduate in density the further from the object that is casting the shadow.
Form shadows are the shadows onthe side of an object that is facing away from the primary light source.
The Cast shadow is a shadow that falls apon another object as a result of that object blocking light from the prmary light source.
I hope that helps, I guess that was kind of long winded.
Cheers.

hmm - so unless it is ice or the sea/water or any other not natural blue lightsource the blue from the sky doesn't get mixed into the skin at all? That's interesting..I didn't know that

Yeah not noticably as far as I understand it, its in there but not really visibly. Only reflected sources would 'shed' blue or a blue light source. Of course if you want to examine skin there are shades of blues (viens and beard growth, etc) greens yellows, etc. But you wouldnt have the strong blue cast as a dominant light from your normal blue midday sky.

luminosity is reduced in overcast, or snowy/icy atmospheres too, colour stays the same (white to yellow) but skintones take on paler colouration, more beige than pink with your colder shadows, highlight/lightsource remains white/yellow depending on sun height, indoor, you can get away with anything and blame it on coloured bulbs hehe, but yep, some colour bounces of surrounding surfaces but not much
chris is good at this stuff, i tend to ignore learning completely and wing it hehe
btw, heya tascha :D :D

hey monk :)
I see I see...thanks for the input. I find it extremely interesting to observe colours. I always go ahhhh yeah that's logical when I see it in nature but then I kind of forget about it when I render (I see so many mistakes in my latest painting now >_<)

Steeldolphin, I see you almost typed "eros" when responding to Tascha. "Freudian Slip" if I ever saw one. I guess Tascha has that effect on men. ;)
Thanks for the helpful thread Tascha, Steeldolphin, and Monk!
