Here's another one of my little robots, but you're actually able to pick him up. :)

He's crafted from poly clay over wire steel armature coated in nice paint-on iron and then, finally, a rapid rust solution has been applied. I just let the rust appear where it wanted to - Kinda like nature. The chemicals take about 2 hours to turn the iron into a rusted mess. Got some lovely textures to happen - Almost looks like the kind of iron artifacts I dug out of the ground when I was a kid.

I really love this, you never cease to amaze me sir. Do you plan on painting up the base and adding some grass or something like that for texture there?

Hi SD!

I'm planning on doing something with the base, but I'm in a bit of a pickle with it. You see, the base is in a bit of a mess and to get a good finish, I think I'm going to have to remove it. Unfortunately, the armature though the sculpture is attached to it via drilled holes and (very) strong epoxy glue.

I'm debating whether I should remove the base and risk damaging the sculpture (The thing is quite fragile, despite it's appearance) or perhaps, just leave it and do something a little more clever next time.

I think that I might be able to drill it off the base with some luck. If I do manage it, I'll probably get a really dark woodstain and stain a new base for it, before drilling and gluing it in place. I like the idea of this rusted and rough thing juxaposed against something really shiny and clean.

Whatever I end up doing, my plan next time is to make a temporary base to model and fire with, but only have the wires jammed into the holes, rather than glued. That way, I can remove the fired model and mount it to a previously prepared base. Live and learn. :)

Grass is a nice idea, and perhaps easiest to cover up my messy globs, but that would push it too far in the direction of a Diorama, which is something I'm trying to avoid.

Thanks for looking! Any experience with removing delicate sculptures from wooden boards?

Yeah really wicked.

Whats wrong with a dioramas?

What about some acrylic gel medium on the base and then just paint it a flat colour.

:)

Ohh, I likes :), imo you shouldnt paint over it, the rust effect and the "metal look" goes perfectly with this sculpture.

Thanks for the comments guys and gal!

I think I'm going to take the plunge and hack the base off and pop on a new one. Grass is a nice idea for later, but I want it to be a piece concentrating on the little boiler, not a little scene with him in. Um, does that make sense?

The operation will either work flawlessly, or I'll end up giving the poor little chap some first aid.

I'll post pics when I've got the new base on there.

omg I love him... I want one :)

The rust looks rather yellow though (instead of redish) or is that just my monitor?

Oh and how big is he?

Very nice work I would love to have talent to make some day a sculture like that. The colors you used match very well with your personage and I beleive that not only adult will like it but kids as well.
