well i customized a font for my logo and now i cant get 2 pieces to merge, i have no clue whats going on. i clicked pretty much all the tools on the tool palette and nothing. any clue?

Use the PATHFINDER tools. They're grouped with the align pallette.
Simply select the two shapes you wish to merge and hit the first button (Add to Shape Area) and then hit "Expand". This should work :)
