what is the end result? For sale (posters, mounts etc.) or for your portfolio?
Very general guidelines for matting, I prefer to use black matte for color photos and white for BW, the matt dimensions depends largely on the subject of the photo. Less space and the photo apears more open and big (obvious choice for most landscapes) and more spce makes the subject appear smaller or 'confined' which may help to enhance the theme of the photo.
choosing color mattes gets a bit more tricky.
Hope that helps for now. :)

ahhh, whoops, maybe i should have rephrased.
I was talking the border work and titling which you guys put around/on the webpresented versions

Well I usually add a black border for the color pics, however recently I have just been using the whole slide scanned image. SO what you are seeing is the slide as is direct form the scan before any cropping.
So what you are seeing in mine are:
border = scan :)
tilt = crooked scan :)
I just like how they look right out of the scanner so I dont crop em anymore. :)

Ahh, ok.
Btw what scanner do you use. Cos im currently stuck on a Canon Flatbed, so i kinda crop them as they come in

Little change of subject. I know you can buy slide scanners from Nikon, and Canon, etc But is there a way to scan slides on a normal flatbed. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot :P

Yeah, you can get a standard flatbed and chuck a slide on it
But dont close the cover. that way you get light going through the slide.
Should work
Ill try a bit later.

Yeah, you can scan on a standard flat bed but the results are rarely very good as compared to an actual slide/film scanner. You usually need to have a special attachment that allows for slide/ film scanning on a flatbed though.

Where would I get this attachment?

Dan, it depends largely on the type of scanner you have, I hear that there is an attachment that fits 'universally' to any flatbed, but I also here it sucks for quality. Some scanners come with the ability to scan slides (these would be preferable to the previous) if you wish to do the non-dedicated scanner route.
The universal attachment can problably be purchased at any larger electronics outlet type store.
Cheers.
*sorry about hijacking your thread takai ;) *

takai - Haha, sorry about that too. Your topic brought this too mind.
Chris, do you have a film scanner? Do they hook up to the pc via USB or Firewire?

No, I have been looking at the Nikon Cool Scan, but for now freakyclean is being kind enough to let me use his, which is a Minolta I believe, and would bet that its a USB.

Oh, cool. I didn't know you guys knew each other personally. :)
Their pretty expensive, but I'd imagine the investment is worth it. What does it cost to have a lab do it?

Try and use firewire, faster transfer rates than USB.
Nikon Coolscan is a wicked unit, it has built in software that removes minor imperfections like finger prints as it performs the scan. The thing I don't like about it is the price especially considering that you're restricted to 35mm. Minolta, Kodak and Polaroid multi-format scanners are a better buy, but come with a heavier price tag....wish I had one
