First off I want to say hey there to all the wonderful folks of this forum. I've been lurking for a bit and have been inspired by this website to work on digital art.

This is a new hobby for me. It will become apparent that I'm not a professional, but I think it's fun to be creative and such. Back in the day I used to have some artistic skill, and I've been trying to dust it off as well as learn how to use my tablet and the Adobe Software Illustrator CS and Photoshop CS.

So, after all that I post my first attempt at turning line art into digital inking, and then flattening it. Please let me know what you think. All suggestions are very welcome. Thick skin is a job requirement so trust me, I'd love the input. This is also my tester project, so if the suggestions require going back a few squares, I'll take the suggestions onboard for next time. This one I am going to attempt to press through to a finished project for the process training. Any hints for the next step, or tip...I'll give you my first born!

Thanks again Steel Dolphin community.

the line art actually isnt that bad, I can see you have the drawing skills as a base there. I cant offer much on the way of digital inking but one suggeston may be to use slightly more controlled strokes maybe even use illustrator and the pen tool as opposed to freehand.. just used varied line weights.

The flat colors look like they have some areas that didn't quite get filled in entirely like maybe you used the magic wand or something similar to select the area and the tolerance was too high, I would suggest using the lasso tool then filling with the foreground color by using alt+backspace (Adobe PS).

Nice start though and I look forward to seeng more from you.

Nice start man. I can't really say to much about it since I've never made a digital painting my self, but anyway I agree with SD and I can also see that you've got some drawing skills.

Thank you both for taking the time to look at my little attempt. I took your advice and went back to the inking stage and learned how to use the pen. Not the most intrinsic thing, but I'm starting to understand it's power.

While I didn't re-ink the entire picture, I did use the pen to clean up the nastiest portions (I thought) of the origional. Specifically, the pistol and collar. I also did a bit of touching up here and there on his hands and face, as well as taking much more care when coloring. Finally I'm able to manipulate a single point! Hopefully that helps with the sloppy lines.

Anyhow, here's the latest. I hope to start adding skin tone, shadow and the like. I've been reading several tutorials but any sage tips before I jump in would be great, as well as comments on if I took the offered advice properly or not.

Alright,

My first render. I'm not sure if the edges of the cuts need to be blended or smugged, and I could really use some suggestions on how to make interesting hair textures and how to improve on the coller using color.

In any case, I appreciate the feedback as always.
