Portrait of a portrait.

This may be a familiar face to some of those who run about GF...I asked Paragon Effect (http://www.paragoneffect.com) if I could do a digital painting of her photograph entitled 'Self Portrait' (http://www.steeldolphin.com/forum/self_portrait_paragon.jpg). She said yes. :)

I am pretty happy with how it tuned out, of course I had to grunge it up...as the final painting just wasn't 'finished' enough and I wanted to add that extra something. I also left out a few earings...ooops. :)

Digitally painted 100% PS 7 (the brushes were trouble getting used to) grunge effects added in same program. :) Original Painting is approx 2100x2200 pixels. Painting time 5.5 hours.

Comments are welcome.

Cheers.

Good work

Do you do it in one sitting or say 5 sessions of an hour?

:)

I ended up doing it in one sitting last night. The time flies when you do this sort of stuff.

Hey Steel, nice work. But I have to say, I really really really (truly) like your avatar. Did you create it? Is it a character?

alda.b: the avatar is a character in an online comic I have been concepting for some time now (its been on hold for a while). The Drawing is by Jimmy R. Vann, and I did the colors. If you want to see more of this stuff go tothe following links. :)

Nice job, but I still see the same trouble with the nose as your other pictures. It should really be defined with lots of contrast to seperate it from the face.

I had a paint over but the power went out and I lost it. I never "save frequently" for paintovers since I just drag the jpg to photoshop and work on it untill its finished without saving. So that pissed me off since the power went out right when I was finishing it. I would have redone it if I just started, but I was literally 30 seconds away from saving and finishing up.

heheh...thanks for going throught he trouble anyways adam, noses and eyes are always a problem for me. I will try to work on that more in future paintings. I was kind of lucky on this one as I think the eyes turned out fairly true to the original which is VERY unusual for me, not something easily duplicated for me either. :)

Cheers.

Okay I updated it...added some detail into the nostril to help pop it out more, problably could stand for more, but the right side of the face is intentionally overeposed. :)

Mega brownie points awarded for the nice, but undeserved, compliment. (:

Great job on this... one of the things I like about your digital paintings are that you can tell it isn't merely a "paint over". I'll let the lack of earrings slide as this turned out so well. Heh.

I recently created a "true" self-portrait of myself... you know, the kind that aren't based off of photos:

Super geeky computer glasses, eh? Steel, your hair color choice is like 3 million times better than mine. You'd think I'd be able to represent something I've looked at for the past 23-odd years better, but I guess I'll credit that to lack of talent on my part. (: Either way, great job!

Paragon, I love your "real" self-portrait. Did you paint it with a mirror next to your monitor? ;)

Both you and Steel amaze me with your digital painting abilities.

:) Nice painting Paragon. :) I really like the feel of it, the brush strokes are very immediate and has a great amount of character. :)
