You know how when you draw something complex, like a person, or an animal of some sort, you draw it in parts right? Like you draw the head and then you take your pen or your mouse off the paper, in this case the Adobe Illustrator document. Well I can't join the paths up after I've drawn them in parts, and I need to because when they're not all joined together to form a complete closed path it doesn't fill it with color properly.

If the end points of the path are on top of each other you can select both of the with the direct select (white) arrow then right click and pick join path. You can also go under object->path->join path (at least that where I think it is).

You can only use this metod if the end points are directly on top of one another.

If they are not on top of one another than you can use the pen tool, click on the end of one line and then the end of the other and it will join them (then cursor will slightly change as you hover over each endpoint to show you are clicking in the right place.

You can switch to preview mode (in view menu) to get a more accurate view of the paths.

Oh, but what about joining bits of paths without endpoins? Could I maybe use compound paths?

A compound path is basically 2 closed shapes made into one object.

Like a donut is made up of an inner and outer circle.

Take two circles that are centered with each other and apply "make compound path" and you will get a donut which is then treated as one object.
