It was a quickie, and needs to be proofed and refined, but here is a first look at it.

Nice work Chris. It's very easy to follow and the results are nice as well. I would mention which version of PS you are using though. The brush features you are using aren't available before 7.0

Good point john, and it will be a change I make for sure.

Any body with CS? Does this tut work for that too? I would like to keep the tut up to date but I havent upgraded yet.

am gonna try it in cs.
but in cs, they have an expert giving a little tut on how to create smoke, and its just as simple as creating a line, and using a smudge tool!!!!
try it in the other versions its simple as hell but gives off a great effect.

Yeah I have used the smudge to in the past for smoke, in fact Polykarbon had a tut on its use on his site not sure if its still there.

Anyways I have never been much for the smudge tool, I have seen people use it for clouds to great effect, but I just cant get it to do what I want.

um chris? im having trouble making the cloud outline look similar to the one in ur tutorial...how do you get it to look darker at its top but fades into a lighter tone going to the bottom so smoothly?

that occured becuase of where the gradient inthebg got lighter in value in comparison to the value i was using for the foreground clouds...its almost like an optical illusion. :)

so should i be taking colours gradually from the background until it matches the background?

You can if you want. or you can try using the eraser tool along the bottom with the opacity set to pressure.
