Okay here is my first traditional acrylics painting since college...I wont say when that was but it was a long time ago...

After spending more time onthe underpainting than batman and the buildings themselves this one is done. I kinda wanted to be more abstract than it is...but....

Acrylic on canvas 24" x 36"

Here are some sketches in my lil notebook with some progessions in my thought processes before this painting was completed.

This was my original idea...after doing the first stage I realized it was a bit beyond my patience...to complete.

Some ideas for the painting as I struggled for an idea.

The final sketch

Anyways i know it doesnt have much substance but it was fun to do anyways. :)

disclaimer: anything you do is usually better than i can do

pros
+ i love the colors and the feeling of the towering buildings.
+ i like the treatment on the moon

cons
+ i wish there were more separation between the figure and the background.
+ his face seems a little off, maybe its his nose or chin that bothers me the most. not sure.
+ would have loved to seen more done with the sky, similar to your digital paintings
+ would be neat to see a little more dynamic lighting from the moon. the whole thing seems dark, and at night, so why not some more lighting effects on the figure?

summary
you > me

Thanks jason, all good points.

Perhaps I should have ran a highlight down the other side to help separate him more from the bg. But at the time of working on it I liked how it was evolving in that area, but now that its finished I would agree with you.

I will problably end up gessoing over this painting in a few weeks when I have completed the other canvas I am working on. Partly to save on money and partly because I dont really want to have this type of painting but it was a good exercise. :)

You know what?....I am not just saying this- but Dub kinda said it all eh!.......I have to agree with him on his comments....and I noticed there was some thing missing....a wee light burning in those buildings, you kinda always have added this in your pieces- but don't get me wrong, this is a good piece of work SD

I really like this. I agree with dub`s comment about the face seeming a little off..

I have taken your name out of my little black book of artists that are good and therefore I must hate and now added you into my little red book of good artists that I respect and therefore really hate... :cheeky:

Thanks hazely :)

This canvas is destined for gessoing however, so I guess its fortunate I have a digital image for posterity. :)

I have to agree with Dub as well here, but then again... I know what pain in the ass acrylics can be so very nice first try after so long man. Perhaps I should give it a go my self one day in near future.

Yeah I agree with dub...also oddly Batman is somewhat difficult to draw...don't knowwhy but I always have problems with him...

well this painting has been painted over...heheheh...so the digital record is all I have of it now.

I have started another painting which I am fairly happy with and may even do a two part series (seeing as I have two canvases of the same size).

I just thought I would let you guys no -that is if anyone really cares. :)

I should be posting up results this weekend of the first one - assuming I dont screw it up to badly. :)

Kriegs' last post =

Chris, I'm a little late on this one. My favorite part of the piece is the castle/tower. I'm not so much into the flesh tone face, I think it would look awesome shadowed out or brought down in intensity, leaving the eyes as intense as they are, or maybe even more so. I certainly respect anyone that does large acrylics since I'm dealing with them now myself. Good job man! :grin2:
