Just got back from a lecture by author and (self proclaimed) "hack" graphic designer Dave Eggers. Most of you who do know him know him from his book A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375725784/qid=1078110970//ref=pd_ka_2/002-1571659-5776868?v=glance&s=books&n=507846), however he also has a number of interesting projects: Most noteable are San Fransisco's 826 Valencia (http://www.826valencia.org/) which is a kind of quirky writing center/tutoring space/retail store that sells, no kidding, Wholesale Pirate Gear. Also interesting is McSweeney's (http://www.mcsweeneys.net/), which is a self published internet and print literary journal, that was also featured in the most recent Cooper-Hewitt Design triennial. He is also the driving force behind Believer Magazine (http://www.believermag.com/) and the now defunct Might Magazine.
